Questions About your Bill
Our bills show the current charges broken down so you see exactly what you're paying for.
What is an Electricity Charge?
This is the cost of the electricity supplied to you during this billing period and is the only part of the bill that is subject to competition.
Note: The Ontario Energy Board approves all increases and decreases to the electricity prices. Your consumption in kilowatt-hours (kWhs) is separated into two price tiers under the Government's Regulated Price Plan. Customers will be charged one rate per kilowatt hour (kWh) for the first 1,000 kWhs of use per 30 days, while electricity consumed in excess of this ceiling will be priced at a slightly higher rate per kWh per 30 days. The price threshold (the amount of electricity that is charged at the lower price) changes twice a year for residential consumers. The price threshold will be 1,000 kWh per month during the winter season (Nov 1 - Apr 30) and 600 kWh during the summer season (May 1 - Oct 31). This allows consumers to use more electricity at a lower price in the winter. For more information visit the Ontario Energy Board's Web site.
What is a Delivery Charge?
These are the costs of delivering electricity from the generator to the Local Distribution Company, then to your home or business. These include the costs to build and maintain the transmission and distribution lines, towers and poles and operate provincial and local electricity systems. A portion of these charges are fixed and do not change from month-to-month. Some of these charges are variable and increase or decrease depending on the amount of electricity that you use.
What is a Regulatory Charge?
Regulatory Charges are the costs of administering the wholesale electricity system and maintaining the reliability of the provincial grid.
What is a Debt Retirement Charge?
The Debt Retirement Charge pays down the debt of the former Ontario Hydro. The money is transferred to the Ontario Electricity Financial Corporation.
What is a Security Deposit?
A security deposit is charged to all customers and is 2.5 times the monthly average utility bill. The Security Deposit will be waived for Customers who can supply us a letter of Reference that provides information consistent with a good payment history from either a Canadian gas or electric utility. A good payment history includes; not more than one Reminder or Disconnect Notice; not more than one cheque returned due to Non-Sufficient Funds (NSF); and no disconnections. Carma does not perform credit checks, however you can provide one to us at your expense.
What is an Account Set-up Charge?
Customers are subject to an Account Set-up Charge when a new account is opened. Currently, the charge is $30.00 and is approved by The Ontario Energy Board. This charge covers the cost amending the records and verify accuracy of billing information. This charge also applies when there is a change in occupancy.
